Measured as the percentile of the waste re-sorted, handled and quantified as that which qualify as re-usable, repurpose-able, and recyclable – as against the total waste stream handled for the day.
Averages in %
Averages by Weight
Intervenors
- Acceptable average – 40-80%.
- True increase expected when waste stream is primarily processed for use as a Segregated Combustible Fraction (SCF) or as Alternate Fuel & Resources (AFR).
- Apparent increase chiefly due to errors in re-sorting, classification and weigment.
- True decrease chiefly due to lack of segregation at source and high moisture content of waste stream and inadequate training among re-sorting personnel.
- Apparent decrease chiefly due to apathy and lack of supervision.
Actions to be taken
- Check weighment procedures in the Resource Recovery Centre.
- Train and re-train personnel involved in the re-sorting process and intensify supervision.
- Liaise with personnel involved in collection and transport to improve segregation rates and decrease moisture content.
- Conduct individual supervisory checks on personnel involved in re-sorting and take appropriate corrective measures.
Confounders
- Machinery breakdown will show a lower result as the recovered material cannot be weighed.
- A single special stream, depending on it’s nature, will either lower or raise the recovery rate.
- Special activities such as clearing of backlogs will show higher rates.
